Teaching Online for the City Colleges of Chicago

Please read the information below to find out how to become an online instructor. Please note that Academic Affairs at each college coordinates and manages the instructional delivery of online courses for CCC students and faculty.                             

What are the qualifications to teach online?                            

  • A Master’s degree that qualifies you to teach the respective course content in accordance with the City Colleges of Chicago Credential Guidelines.              
  • Successful completion of professional development in online education.                 
    • Quality Matters (QM) and CCC                 
      • QM Teaching Online: An Introduction to Online Delivery (TOL)                
      • QM Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR)                 
      • Introduction to teaching in Brightspace at CCC (BSP 201)       
    • If you completed any Illinois Online Network (ION) courses, please contact to discuss your options.                      
    • Learn more about the learning outcomes for the above courses or if you have training in online instruction other than those described above and are interested in having your coursework reviewed for online instruction at CCC.                 
    • Note that Applying the Quality Matters Rubric and Introduction to Teaching in Brightspace at CCC are required courses and will not be waived.
Register for Quality Matters (QM) Courses
All CCC faculty and staff preparing to teach online are eligible to take the QM courses & workshops at the discounted member rate. In order to receive the discounted rate, use your CCC employee email address to create your MyQM account and select your CCC home college (as identified by Human Resources) as your affiliation and Higher Education as your program. District Office personnel should contact Dave Brashinger in Online Learning for affiliation instructions.    
Once your account is created, you can register for workshops from the QM professional development schedule
During the registration process, you will be asked to select your method of payment. Select "Credit Card" and proceed to payment information. On the following screen, select "Party Responsible for Payment: Self." Faculty should see the contacts listed at the bottom of this page to discuss reimbursement from professional development funds.

Register for Introduction to Teaching in Brightspace at CCC (BSP 201)
Introduction to Teaching in Brightspace at CCC is a three-week, asynchronous, online course facilitated by CCC faculty. It defines online and hybrid courses, covers instructor's roles and responsibilities for teaching online courses at CCC, and shows you how to use Brightspace tools needed for effective teaching.    
You should plan to spend 8-12 hours/week on course activities.      
There is no registration fee for this course. NOTE: Either the Quality Matters Teaching Online: An Introduction to Online Delivery (TOL) workshop or ION: Overview of Online Instruction (ION:OO) course must be successfully completed prior to starting BSP 201.     
Before class begins you are expected to know how to create modules and topics, post a syllabus, and create an announcement in Brightspace. Please refer to the CCC Brightspace Resources and Training Calendar if you need to develop or refresh your skills prior to class.   

Register for ION (Illinois Online Network) Courses

All CCC employees are eligible to take the ION courses at a discounted rate of $150 dollars per course.  In order to receive the discounted rate, use your CCC employee email address to create your ION account and enter our member code when prompted.  Please contact your college human resources office for the ION member code to receive the discount.

Online Teaching Assignment Agreement                  

Faculty offered an online teaching assignment must agree to and sign an agreement that outlines requirements for online faculty. Demonstrated adherence to the agreement is required for subsequent assignments to teach online.  

Electronically sign the Online Teaching Assignment Agreement. You will receive a PDF copy of the signed document via email.

Online Learning Courses                            

To view online learning course offerings, search the current semester schedule.
Credential Review                  

Upon completion of the required courses, follow your college's credential review process for credit courses. Contact your college's Dean of Instruction for any questions about the credential review process. 

Instructors are expected to provide evidence of successful completion of professional development requirements (ex. Quality Matters certificates of course completion, ION transcripts, grade reports) and a copy of the signed Online Teaching Assignment Agreement in their request for review.    

Documentation of successful completion of BSP 201 Introduction to Teaching in Brightspace at CCC is maintained by Online Learning. No certificate is required.     

Instructors requesting to substitute professional development other than those currently required by CCC should provide evidence of learning outcomes achieved (ex. syllabus) and documentation of successful completion (ex. certificate, transcript, letter) in their request.                          

Faculty with official transcripts on file with CCC do not need to resubmit transcripts. Those without official transcripts will be asked to submit them.
